Eating Local in the Lunchroom

Eating Local in the Lunchroom

In Nebraska, there’s an interesting program promoting local sourcing in school lunch programs. The program, sponsored by the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition  and Live Well Omaha, raises food consciousness in the public school environment.

Farm to School connects schools (levels kindergarten through 12th grade) and local farms with the objectives of serving more healthful meals in school cafeterias; improving student nutrition; providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities; and supporting local and regional farmers and producers.

By including farm-student interaction, as well as getting product from local sources, this program helps students understand that their food doesn’t come from “the store” it comes from Earth. Could this model work in other locations, such as Texas or California? Let us know in the comments if you have a similar program in your area.
